Invasive alien species in aquatic environments - Practical information and management insights - Vol. 4
Invasive alien species (IAS) and their impacts represent a growing concern for the managers of natural areas. In both continental France and the overseas territories, a large number of people and organisations have taken action to limit the damage. Following on from the previous works, volume 4 brings together 25 unpublished project management reports in aquatic and terrestrial environments, including 8 in the French overseas territories.
Context: a major issue for biodiversity and complex management
Recent public policies launched on both the EU and national levels facilitate the work, however significant new knowledge is needed before any real progress can be made in both continental France and the overseas territories. This is because numerous and diverse species of fauna and flora from an array of freshwater, terrestrial and marine ecosystems are involved in the biological invasions and it is necessary to share experience and knowledge in order to improve the methods and techniques currently used.
In the field, which species are managers attempting to address? Which techniques are used, where and how, and what are the objectives and the results achieved? What new initiatives have been launched?
4 volumes for learning and experimenting
- Volume 1, Practical information and management insights presents the current situation concerning invasive alien species in aquatic environments in continental France. In order not to provide a recipe, key operational approaches are proposed, attempting to integrate the specificities of each situation. It was published in 2015 in the Knowledge for action collection.
- Volume 2, Practical information and management insights, published the same year, illustrates this overview with over 50 project management reports.
- Volume 3, Practical information and management insights, published in 2018 thanks to the dynamic initiated, compiled 35 project management reports.
Volume 4 in figures
- 25 new project management reports, including 8 in the the overseas territories,
- 12 new species of flora and fauna, and 8 already presented,
- almost 50 contributors: the fruit of the work of the The Invasive Alien Species Resource Centre co-directed by the The French Biodiversity Agency (OFB) and the The French committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with the support of the Overseas Invasive Alien Species network.
